The Cohn Restaurant Group’s first full-service eatery, opened by David and Lesley Cohn at its original Hillcrest location in 1987—was focused on 1950s nostalgia in both its décor and menu. While the latter paid tribute to the era with burgers, fries and shakes, the former evoked it with visual cues that included staff attire and interior furnishings—the most striking of which was the Corvette Diner’s namesake and ‘50s iconic car, which seemed to be bursting from the back wall.

In 2009, the Cohns expanded their thriving eatery by moving it to Liberty Station—a former Navy Training Center, recycled into an expansive urban community in the Point Loma neighborhood. With more than twice its previous space, the Diner now bridges the 20th and 21st centuries, having added such attractions for kids and adults as the 5,000-sq. ft. Gamers’ Garage arcade, vintage movies, live music, a working Corvette sports car and an eclectic menu that caters to most tastes and preferences—including the following healthy dishes (prices may change):

• Turkey & Swiss ($9.50)—with house-roasted turkey, Swiss cheese, sliced tomato, mayo (optional—could be replaced with mustard), on whole wheat bread.

• Galaxy Grilled Veggies ($8.99)—with fresh grilled eggplant, zucchini, roasted red peppers, sautéed mushrooms, mozzarella & pesto on cheese bread.

• California Dreamin’ Chicken Sandwich ($11.50)—with avocado guacamole, green chilies, lettuce, tomato, onion & pepper-jack cheese (optional).

• Hawaii 5-0 Chicken Sandwich ($10.99)—with grilled slices of pineapple, lettuce, tomato, onion, teriyaki sauce.
